In mtg it's hard if not impossible to find decks that aren good stuff in standard, with less linear strategy only appering in non rotating format, but the problem of mtg is simply how unbalanced the color pie is with some color (blue/black) having an infinite amount of mechanics while something like red have only 3 usable mechanics (burn, aggro, and combat tricks), which obv become worse in non rotating format where you are forced to play x color or you cant even compete The color pie solves another one of Yugioh's problems which is that it constrains deckbuilding and (in theory) prevents someone from putting all the best cards from each color in the same deck In MTG with infinite mana you can cast everything, in ygo you need to set up in a way to allow the cards you have to be played YGO always had "monster" as resources and it's extremely more limited than mtg with only one normal summon per round, this is fixed by the fact that ygo card are more complex (both in restriction and effects) than mtg cards and the fact they dont follow a simple progression like mtg cards do In particular, YGO's lack of a resource system means there's often no real stopping point to prevent you from doing everything on your first turn. One of the most ignorant comment I ever saw (not in a bad way tho, I mean like in "ignore") Generally Modern / Legacy games you won't take 3-5 minutes per turn, especially not in the first few turns. I still think those formats are better than Yugioh but they can be pretty broken. spells that you can pitch cards from your hand instead of paying mana, like hand traps). Once you get into Modern and Legacy you will get more "Yugioh" style gameplay. Pioneer is my favorite format right now as I think it strikes a good balance between fun and expense. Pioneer and onwards are non-rotating, meaning you can invest in a deck and play it for a long time (barring power creep and bannings). Standard is a fine starting point but keep in mind you are signing up for a rotating format and so your cards will become obsolete within a year or two. Generally speaking the older a format is, the higher the power level. The major formats would be Standard, Pioneer, Modern, and Legacy. Given that you have 20 life in Magic (compared to Yugioh, which has 8000 but on the Magic scale feels more like 8), most of the time people will choose not block the first few attacks in a game. This means you can play weaker creatures with useful abilities and expect them to survive provided the opponent doesn't have a removal spellĪfter the attacking player declares attacks, defending player can choose whether or not to block with their creatures. For one creature to kill another creature generally requires a special ability or card effect. To understand combat in Magic, the basic difference you need to know is that:Īttacking player declares attacks with all creatures at onceĬreatures attack players, not other creatures. If anything, the corresponding system in Yugioh would be "archetypes" where Konami effectively predefines which cards should play well together based on card names. Yugioh has an attribute system (Light / Dark etc) but in my experience its basically an afterthought and doesn't matter for the vast majority of decks. The color pie solves another one of Yugioh's problems which is that it constrains deckbuilding and (in theory) prevents someone from putting all the best cards from each color in the same deck. Compare this to Magic where that isn't an effective strategy because you have to spend mana for everything, which means you start out very constrained and can usually only play one or two spells per turn. That means if your deck is 40 draw spells you can potentially cast all 40 on turn 1 (in theory). the resource system, color pie, and combat). Not sure if you know the history of Yugioh, but it's basically a derivative copy of Magic with a lot of essential elements dumbed down or removed entirely (i.e. I played Yugioh before Magic and IMO Magic is vastly superior.
